dhi residence

A residential interior in Udupi is an exploration of restraint, warmth, and place-rooted design. The project draws inspiration from the region’s coastal vernacular - its materials, proportions, and quiet rhythms - while interpreting them through a contemporary lens.

Traditional cues such as soft arches, exposed wooden rafters, and muted earthy finishes are reimagined in a simplified, modern language.

Locally familiar elements like teak-toned wood, clay-inspired wall textures, and tiled surfaces anchor the interiors in their cultural context, while clean lines, minimal detailing, and carefully integrated lighting bring in a sense of present-day living.

Given the compact nature of the home, spatial efficiency was key. Furniture, storage, and lighting were designed to feel light and unobtrusive, allowing the spaces to remain open, breathable, and naturally lit. A restrained palette - warm neutrals balanced with subtle coastal blues, creates continuity across the interiors while enhancing the calm, lived-in quality of the home.

The result is a modest yet thoughtful interior that feels rooted, familiar, and quietly contemporary, reflecting the everyday life of Udupi through a modern design approach..
